Chao Phraya River House
Ever since first exploring the area, Vaslab has noticed the land along the Chao Phraya River is unique. We designed this house focused on the view overlooking the Chao Phraya River. Regarding the design proposal, the owners wanted privacy from the main street in front of the house, as there is a public parking area where people are roaming around. Therefore, We decided to use the surrounding context as a starting point to serve a purpose in the three-storey house for all five family members: the father, the mother and the three children.
Vaslab designed the house by created polished lines in an “angular form” so that people in the house can live within the essence of the architecture. We focus on space, not form and believe that the best space is not limited to boxy form. The form’s lines therefore reference the oblique lines of the boundary, the compression and loosening of the space, and the opening and closing of perspective. These are all directly related to the design of house’s forms.
Since the task involves tectonics, we solved the problem of zoning within the house. The first floor is an open plan that uses the floor level difference to divide each function from most to least private. There is a terrace and an outdoor swimming pool. On the second floor, there is the common area, four bedrooms, which has a private balcony facing the Chao Phraya River, and a single corridor that creates more privacy. On the third floor is the studio of the 3 daughters who study design.
Finally, we arrive at the prototype of the home. The overall design of the three story building may have lost a sense of home, so Vaslab added horizontal lines resembling a dynamic ship’s form to make the house look shorter, and therefore feel more homely. Thus, it perfectly suits the heart of the Chao Phraya River.
